Mission Statement
We are a Eucharist-centered, spirit-filled people who choose to form parish community and to experience spiritual growth through life-giving liturgies in a worship space of beauty and reverence. Out of a long history of spiritual leadership from the Society of Jesus, we are challenged with the Gospel values of love, compassion, and social justice. As a worshipping community, we extend hospitality and fellowship. We enrich our faith through prayer, diversity of membership, attention to family life and social ministry. We empower the laity in bringing forth the Kingdom of God and foster interfaith partnerships. We seek to deepen and grow in our commitment to being a Jesuit Parish at Saint Louis University in the center of the City of Saint Louis.

Background Information on St. Francis Xavier Church

St. Francis Xavier "College" Church was founded by the Jesuits in 1836. Originally, the congregation met in the College Student Chapel of St. Louis University and, therefore, became familiarly known as the "College Church", a name by which it is known to this day. In 1897, the neighborhood around the church boasted some of the grandest homes in the City of St. Louis. One-hundred years later the face of the neighborhood is quite different with homeless people, low-income residents and people in transitional housing dominating the area.

Today Social Ministry and the outreach efforts play a significant role in the St. Louis area. In 2008 over 3,900 individuals were helped through this program. An integral part of our mission at St. Francis Xavier Church is outreach assistance for poor, transient and homeless people living in our city area who are most in need. Our visitors come to us from the streets, from neighboring shelters, and from many agencies that now refer them to us for our special outreach services. We are known city-wide for the financial and technical assistance we provide to poor and low-income people in obtaining some form of identification - a state photo ID and a requisite birth certificate. This is a unique and basic service that very few state institutions, agencies or religious organizations are providing for this population at this time.
